You Have a Newborn Baby!? But Do You Know The Baby Sleep Science?
“I never expected myself to love someone this much” this is the sentence that Tyrell Wellick’s wife in the series of Mr. Robot said while she was lying on bed, touching with her hand softly the face of her new born baby. It is expressing how the parents, and especially the mother, love their babies. A father is feeling like touching the sky when he sees the soft face of his new baby. And mothers hold the pain of labor, and hold it for nine month, for that moment to see that part of her body coming out of her, and becoming a coming child, then a teen, and an adult; a life in front of her to handle. That is why I decided today to write about baby sleep science, because most of people suffer during the early days of their baby to make him/her sleep.
Certainly sleep is a big deal for a new born baby. That is why many parents find it hard to deal with it. It is hard by the first days, and weeks, but after time and getting used to it, it becomes normal. Usually an adult person sleep almost one-third of the day, but babies sleep more than half the day. And yet it is really bothering for parents, since the babies do not have a specific time to sleep and specific one to wake up.
In order to understand the baby sleep science, you have to understand how, when and why babies sleep that much. So as soon as you understand those tips, you understand how to manage the sleep period of your babies, so that you get your mind’s peace. Therefore, I will be dividing the coming rest of the article according to the age of the baby, and how they sleep.
We shall be starting with the new born babies:
Usually new born babies sleep in random way during the day and night. They sleep like between half an hour, to four hours. And the worst thing is that they wake up really easily. The while that newborn sleep is different, according to how old they are, as if they are in the first few days, they sleep almost eighteen hours per day. And if after getting four weeks old, they sleep over fourteen hours, to later, they sleep about nine hours. But there are some babies who face some medical conditions that prevent them from being in the same sleeping method as others. Unlike the adults who sleeps according to the physiological changes, the thing that let them have their biological clock on, the babies are not governed by those changes. The sleepless parents face this problem of being awaken each time their babies are. The most important tip is that the parents should always keep it quiet around the baby when they are asleep. Because babies do not sleep heavy sleep all that time. They have light sleep. And they are concerned with one simple role: sleep, get fed, digest while sleeping, get hungry, get fed, and sleep.
For a good beautiful life, you have to suffer a little; this is a part of responsibility.
Moving to the time when all this might end:
After the week five, the baby seems to be more understood, and the way he demands things becomes clear and lighter. Parents get used to that, and would have already started to understand the baby sleep science. They start to understand what the baby needs. To the twelfth week, the babies start to follow the night sleep, day awaken. Yet, some babies may take three to five months to get that rhythm of day-night, due to the late production of the hormone of sleep. And if you face the problem that your baby do not regulate to the rhythm of twenty-four hours, then here are some steps to follow:
- Apply your routine on the baby too, though including the babies to their mother’s activities, and the babies seem to adapt easily to that rhythm.
- Try to keep your baby sleep atmosphere as quiet as possible during the night, and do the lesser activities you can during the night. Try to minimize the movement and whispers around the baby.
- Include your baby in your daily life, during the day.
The next would be about how to aid your baby get asleep:
- Use the white soft noise:
Try to get a machine that make soft sounds, such as a heartbeat, calm waterfall, stream or the rain sounds. Try to keep this method as much as you can, because it is so likely that the baby will associate with this sound while sleeping, so it might be helping him to sleep more comfortably.
- The baby pacifier helps him fall asleep:
A pacifier can be really so helpful, since it could help the babies to feel less pain during the medical treatment. And if it could help minimize the pain, so it is likely to aid the baby to sleep. But the pain minimizing works only when the baby sucks the pacifier, because when they stop, they cry a lot. So the pacifier aid might end as soon as the pacifier falls down from the baby’s mouth. It is recommended to watch it over, and keep the baby sucking it.
- Put a chair, and hold the baby, then start rocking him to sleep:
There are two different common ways to rock babies to sleep, either by holding them on arms and rocking them, or rocking them on a cradle. The first one shall be pain killing, as it was showed in some studies that the babies who suck pacifier and being rocked show less pain, and cry lesser, comparing to the ones who suck only the pacifier. And for the cradle rocking, it can be really useful to let a baby sleep tightly and deeply, because they feel more comfortable, and get used to the regular soft movement to calm their minds and sleep.
- How the skin contact aids babies to sleep:
It is becoming so often that a baby can contact his mother skin to skin, due to the materials that has been developed for this reason. But still the contact and touch of the mother the most pleasant thing, and the most adorable feeling for a baby that is starting to experience life.
